THE CAPTAIN AMAZING TRAINEE BURSARY.

Matthew Schmolle Productions in partnership with charity The Working Party are looking to support an early career theatre artist, aged 18+,  who is either interested in making a piece of solo theatre or has one in the pipeline.

We actively encourage candidates from the global majority and working-class backgrounds to apply.

The successful candidate will have time in rehearsals and production with the creative team of Captain Amazing (Alistair McDowall, Clive Judd, Mark Weinman, Georgia De Grey, Will Monks, Asaf Zohar and Matthew Schmolle), dedicated time spent on discussing their ideas, the opportunity to get feedback on their project and the opportunity to perform a scratch / work-in-progress at Southwark Playhouse during the run of Captain Amazing.  Time will also be made to make suitable changes to the placement to fit best with the needs of the successful candidate.

As part of the bursary placement you will:

  • have initial meetings with the writer, director, cast and producer to discuss your project and set your priorities for the placement.

  • w/c 15th April: attend rehearsals three times 2pm – 9pm, the final two hours being free for your work.

  • w/c 23rd April: attend rehearsals three times 11am – 6pm, with team meeting at close of each day

  • w/c 29th April: attend tech rehearsals and preview performances at Southwark Playhouse

  • 2nd May: attend press night at Southwark Playhouse

  • w/c 13th May: rehearse your work in progress or scratch performance at Southwark Playhouse for 2 days

  • 14th and 15th May: perform your work in progress or scratch performance at Southwark Playhouse for 2 performances

  • have an exit interview and next steps planning with Captain Amazing's producer, Matt.

The training bursary placement would take a total of 90hrs.

The amount of the bursary is £1200 and would need to cover all expenses associated with the successful candidates time on the project.  All sessions will take place in central London.

To Apply:

Please send us a short statement (if possible - no more than an A4 side, a 90 second video or voicenote) that answers the following:

  1. Why this opportunity is for you?

  2. What you would like to gain from this opportunity?

  3. What previous experience or training (if any) have you had?

Please also send us a short sample of the solo show you are looking to make.  This could be 5 pages of script or a short video.

All applications should be submitted by midday on Tuesday 12th March to info@matthewschmolleproductions.com. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a short, informal online interview.

If you have any questions regarding the application process, the placement itself or anything else please email info@matthewschmolleproductions.com.
